Darryl De Necker
Susanne Västman

Darryl De Necker was the first to reach 1000 points and Susanne Västman was very close behind.
We’ve awarded them both with the amazing photo book “Swedish!”.
About the book:

“Ingalill Snitt is a photographer with a mind of her own, a highly personal way of seeing and selecting motifs. Together with Marita Jonsson she has travelled through Sweden in search of the Swedish soul. Is it to be found in our love of nature? In our sense of form and design? In our architecture? There is no explicit answer, but the pictures speak of a desire for infinite snow-covered expanses, wind-worn cliffs by the sea, bare facades, and pure, simple forms for everyday objects.”

Here are some Questions and Answers with our first recognized superusers!

Tell us why you’re so active in CommunityOfSweden.com?

Darryl: I love meeting people, I love learning new things, and I love networking. And being a member of CommunityOfSweden.com affords me that opportunity. Afterall, it’s all about Sweden the country I live in now.

Susanne: Trough my work I met a lot of people who is working with tourism in Sweden. During the years I have come to the conclusion that it is very much variousity in how different companies and communities showing themself towards the rest of the world and inside Sweden. Especially up north where I come from. That made me curious.. I found the community by an accident, visiting Visit Swedens site and now I cant stop!
I absolutely love the interest among people around the world taking an interest in Sweden. I had no idea the interest was so genuin all over the world! In my work I have the computor on and is logged in the whole day..If I have a minute or two I look at peoples pages and photoes! In my work I have a lot of phonecalls and sometimes they keep me wait..there is a minute again!
Also I started this updating everyday news, I found out that there is several members that is regulary visiting my page every day just to see what I wrote. That is very motivating!

How do you think CommunityOfSweden.com sets itself apart from other online communities?

Darryl: Transparency. That for me is one of the keys to the success of the site. There’s no private area, or a “friends” only section. You can see who was on your page. All the comments, all the photos, all the stories, all the forums, everything is open, and that I find appealling. There’s nothing to hide, so everyone can learn from everyone else. Another key that seperates this site from others, is the fact that the subject matter is very focussed. It’s only about Sweden. It’s not trying to cover the Northern Hemisphere, or the globe, or be all things to all men or women. It’s plain and simply, only about Sweden. That in itself focusses the membership too.

Susanne: The biggest differens between this community and other must be the common interest of sweden and that everyone, almost, has a story to tell, pictures to show or questions to ask. It is Sweden that is the subject.

What’s your favorite feature in CommunityOfSweden.com?

Darryl: My favourite feature is “My Guestbook”. It’s a place where your friends, strangers or new members can write messages to you. It’s good to see notes there and it’s really good to catch up and chat to others, learn new things, teach new things and have a good time.

Susanne: I like the communikation with everyone the most! I have met some really nice people in the community and I wish they all could come and visit me!

What’s your least favorite feature in CommunityOfSweden.com?

Darryl: My least favourite feature is “I was here”. Not because it doesn’t function well, not because of where it’s positioned on the page, and not because of the colours. But because on mine, there aren’t a lot of flags yet, not a lot of places visited, not a lot of places seen. The entire North of Sweden is empty. Then I look at some of my friend’s “I was here” map, and they have flags all over the place. You can hardly see any blue. So I don’t like the feature because, every time I look at it, it reminds me of how much of Sweden I have missed out on still, and how much I still have to see. And that it’s about time we booked that elusive trip to Kiruna.

Susanne: I am not a regular in the forumpage..I like to go in and read there sometimes but compared to talk directly on the front page feels more alive. Also I must admit that I havent yet taken the time to understand the newest sharingconcept..

Do you have a favorite memory during your time in CommunityOfSweden.com that you can share with us?

Darryl: My favourite memory was the day a friend of mine, who shall remane nameless, changed her profile picture from a beautiful, slender lady sitting on a couch, to a flower, and then to an alligator lying on a river bank. She said it had something to do with marketing, and sending out a message. I think it worked. It’s really funny though.

Susanne: I sure have! The best one is the one who includes one of the members in the community from Italy who was sending me a note that he was searching for a family who lived in Luleå in 1979! He was hichhiking towards the midnightsun in Norway and was picked up by this family and got a lift all the way and an invitation to spend a night on his trip down through Sweden later on. He did and stayed for a week. But then during the years he lost contact with the family and asked if I had any way to search for the family.. I took my detectiveglasses on and acually found the family!! I called the lady the same day and explained who I was and my mission. This now elderly woman was so happy that she started crying, they had thought of this young man several times during the years and she told me that when they was picking him up that day in - 79 he was searching for snails to eat in the ditch! They now have contact again and she has even valled me up on the phone thanking me again for bringing them together!
Right now Ive become involed in a family from argentina who is seriously thinking of moving to Lycksele who is a town not so far from Umeå. Also nice to be able to help!

Is there anything else you’d like to add? :)

Darryl: I like the site because the tone set by our captain (Tommy), is very friendly and sociable. When you start your profile, he’s always there, with a message, to welcome you to the community, and that sets the tone for open and friendly communication. He’s also very open for suggestions and comments on how to improve, what is already a great site. That for me, makes this site and this community, truly remarkeable.

Susanne: I sure hope the community will live on and the numbers of members will grow as it has so far. Right now I wish I could somehow transform it into a real job! That would be great, having a nonstop communication with people around the world who is taking interest of my country! Wow!

Thanks for the kind words there Darryl :)
The forum will get some improvements in the near future so I hope Susanne will start to use it more frequently.

As I always say; a community is only as good as it’s members.
By the looks of it we’re in good shape! :)

New features in CommunityOfSweden.com

I want to mention three updates on CommunityOfSweden.com.
You’ll already be aware of these updates if you are an active member.

Search

In january, two months after the launch, we finally added Search. You can now search amongst stories, members, forum posts and photos. The search automatically searches through all these types by default but you can also limit your search to just photos, for example, if you know that’s what you are interested in.
Discuss Search here in the forum.

We recently added the feature “Share” which makes it possible for you to send the web adress(URL) of the current page you’re on to one or more email addresses to your friends.
The share button can be found on member pages, photos, stories and forum posts.

VisitSweden redesigns it’s website visitsweden.com

2 months after its beta launch, Community of Sweden, surpassed 1000 members. Next step is how we let visitors from the official swedish website – visitsweden.com – get travel tips from our community members. And how to we trigger potential visitors to Sweden to share their travel tips on the Community.

That is one big issue in the development of visitsweden.com. Another important issue is how we take our Google Maps application one step further and let visitors make online bookings by navigating the map.
A third issue is how do we implement the new site based on Content Management System Epi Server 5.0, a .NET platform.

Let me also introduce myself: I, Margareta Björnberg, work as senior webmaster and project manager of the development and re-launch of visitsweden.com. You’ll soon hear more.

A couple of quotes that really made my day:

- Barry, UK.

“My neighbour and I were discussing yesterday, over the garden fence, what it is about your site that is so welcoming compared to others. It really is. Perhaps it is just because it is Swedish - clean, tidy, bright and positive. Cheers.”

Status of CommunityOfSweden.com after one month?

We launched CommunityOfSweden.com nov. 1st on schedule. I think it’s time for an update on the status of things.

How did it go?

The launch went great! We had a couple of major bugs the first few days. Mostly related to the internet explorer browser and some issues with inputing tags correctly.
November will always be remembered by me as the month of bug hunting.
And probably by the developers as the month of bug fixing ;)
We’ve come a long way and although there are still a list of issues to fix there’s nothing big that will impact the user experience negatively and that’s the most important thing.

What’s happened since?

We’ve held off with the marketing of CommunityOfSweden.com during november to make sure we’ve got a good and stable service for our users. We’ve only leaked the launch a little by word of mouth, through this blog and our CEO’s blog.
The marketing activities will start now and continue to grow during december and januari and we have a huge list of marketing activities for 2008. It’s very exciting!

What’s next?

First priority is to fix the remaining issues.
Then we’ll start implementing some functionality that we didn’t have time for before november. Such as search functionality!
Yes of course, you didn’t think we’ve forgotten search did you? :)
Also the share functionality so you can easily send tips about good content you find on CommunityOfSweden.com to your friends.
And more…

I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who have already found your way to CommunityOfSweden.com and become members. Many of you have also helped testing actively and also helping a lot just by providing content to make the community feel alive. Keep it up!
Thank you! :)

The official online community of Sweden has launched!

Around 3.30 pm CET on november 1st 2007 the CommunityOfSweden.com opened it’s doors.

CommunityOfSweden.com is now in it’s public beta phase. Anyone is welcome to join, share and enjoy photos, travel stories, tips and more from friends in Sweden and all over the world.

At this moment we’ve just opened the doors to CommunityOfSweden.com and slowly leaked that it’s open. Big marketing activities will start around middle november.

While you’re in there perhaps you can help us test it? There are still some bugs in functionality, design and texts and we need your help to find them.

Welcome to CommunityOfSweden.com!

(I’ve been wanting to say that for a long time)

The name is official: “Community of Sweden”

It’s not easy naming something. Whatever it is that you’re naming has to live with this name for a very long time. It’s taken a while to come up with a name but we’ve finally got it and we’re very happy with it.
Let me tell you the story.

Selection process

We started to write all kinds of names on a whiteboard in Basecamp. Any suggestion was ok. Even a bad name can lead to a new good idea.
After we had a good long list and no more suggestions seemed forthcoming I started the selection process.
I first threw away some that I knew would never make it.
I then had a list of about 20 names. How to proceed?

Letting you guys vote

We wanted to publish this list here on the development blog to let our readers vote on which names they liked. This would be the ultimate way to pick a name for the community and we loved the idea!
As we were about to do it though, we changed our minds. What if somebody likes a name so much that they steal it? Register the domain for themselves. We would have to register all the domains on the list just in case. This whole idea suddenly seemed risky and ineffective.

Internal voting

So instead I emailed every single person in the company and let them pick three favourites. Everybody chipped in and I quickly got all the votes needed.
The winner: mysweden.com
Great name! We loved it! It makes you think of communities(myspace, hello?), user generated content, a personal touch, everything we wanted really. We even started to use it as a working name for the community.
Unfortunately it turned out that this domain was already taken and the owners were not willing to sell it.
We offered millions and still they refused! Ok, perhaps not millions…

So, back to the list.
It’s somewhere around here that “CommunityOfSweden.com” started to sound really good.

  • It is completely self explanatory. Not everybody has the queens english you know so an easy name is important.
  • It’s 100% search engine optimized. We like that. No, we love that.
  • It has a strong name with some extra familiarity to brands like “Tiger of Sweden” and others, I’m sure.
  • And let’s not forget our amazing embassy in Washington: “House of Sweden”.

I tested the name on everybody in the marketing and communications department and after sleeping on it everybody agreed on the name.

Phew… it’s been said that Swedes are slow to make decisions but when we do make them they are well anchored in the organization. I think this whole process proves it. :)

Go ahead and visit http://communityofsweden.com
It’s almost time for beta testing ;)

Full Speed Ahead

I’m just dropping a few lines to say what’s happening right now and how it’s going.

    - Oakwood has almost done all the design now.
    - Netrelations has implemented half of it into HTML, CSS and scripts.
    - Trive has just begun the development.

Everybody is working hard and doing an amazing job!

Marketing plans are being finalized. PR activities are being discussed.
I feel like there’s thousands of thoughts and ideas and to-do’s running around my head at any given moment but it’s all good. And in the middle of all of this it’s already time to plan for 2008.

I’ve held four presentations about the community during the last two weeks and everybody is very excited!
So how’s it going? Very well! :)

(oh and another thing; I’ll be posting a poll here soon to see what kind of discussion forums you want so stay tuned and make yourself heard)
